Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Looking To Create New Competition

Mar 27, 2019 6:50 AM

Andrea Agnelli, president of the European Club Association (ECA), said that many of the top European clubs are looking to evolve the Champions League format.

"We are at the beginning of the process and we must take more time to analyse all the proposals, as it is not a matter of yes or no. The new Champions League is pure speculation at this time," said Agnelli.

Agnelli added that he wanted to create a solution that would satisfy both big European sides and smaller clubs.

"Real MadridBayern Munich and Juventus want to play the competition, but also hundreds of other teams. We are talking and in a few months we will see if the new competition will be open for everyone. The process will be open and transparent, as was the meeting with UEFA. This is how football should be in the future and the talks will take place between two and 20 months. The dialogue will be open for all the clubs and we will look for a fair system for football and for European clubs, without forgetting all the parties."

Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool Won't Spend Big Money This Summer

Mar 16, 2019 1:53 PM

Jurgen Klopp said that Liverpool have enough quality in their squad where they won't need to spend money this summer.

Klopp added that he wants to focus on squad development.

“I don’t want to talk exactly what we will do but I don’t think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money or whatever. The best way to do it is bring together a group of players, try to develop them altogether and then stay together for a while. And that was maybe the main problem of Liverpool for the last decade. When they had a good team after a season they went all over the world. That will not happen this year for sure," said Klopp.

Klopp added that teams in Europe are beginning to fear Liverpool.

"We have to start looking at ourselves how other teams see us. When you think about how Bayern faced us here – I saw Bayern playing a lot in the last years but I never saw them being that defensive-orientated. When Manchester City came here, it was similar. They had a lot of respect for us but I am not sure we always have the same amount of respect for ourselves."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer On Barcelona Draw: Confidence Is 'Sky High'

Mar 16, 2019 1:49 PM

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said that Manchester United can beat any top team in Europe after getting drawn with Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals.

“We’ve shown against PSG that on any given day we can beat a top team. Then again there’s so many variables and these games will be decided by margins...So yes, we can go all the way but you’ve got to be lucky and good along the way. The confidence in the players, it’s sky high. And the mood is good, the training attitude is good, so hopefully we can keep that run going," said Solskjaer.

Solsjaer added that the tie will come down to whichever side has the momentum.

“[It’s about] momentum – the more games you win, the more confidence you breed, the more hunger there is in the player. Every single game that you win puts another layer on that, on the way to becoming the team that we want to be," he added.

Jorge Mendes: Ronaldo Is The Best Player In History Of Football

Mar 14, 2019 3:32 PM

Super-agent Jorge Mendes summarized his client Cristiano Ronaldo's career, saying he's the greatest player in the history of the game.

"Epic, legendary and divine. He is the best player in the history of football and he demonstrates it," said Mendes following Ronald's hat-trick against Atletico Madrid.

Mendes then added that Ronaldo is the greatest player in Real Madrid history.

"He has made a difference in England and then was the best player in the history of Real Madrid, a club that wouldn't have won so much without him. Ronaldo was the star during the four Champions League titles in five years. Now he'll write some history for Juventus."

Fabio Capello: Messi, Pele, Maradona Are The Only Geniuses

Mar 14, 2019 3:25 PM

Fabio Capello added his input in the debate between Messi and Ronaldo, saying that there are only three geniuses in football.

"Ronaldo is an extraordinary footballer, but Messi is a genius. There are three geniuses in football, PeleDiego Maradona and Messi," said Capello.

Capello distinguished between being a champion and a genius.

"Ronaldo can help his teams win everything, but Messi is genius and goes further. I first came up against Messi when he was just 16 years of age and I was amazed. He already did what he does now, because he is a genius. Ronaldo has become a champion, but he's not a genius."

Bernardo Silva Says He Does Not Want To Play Ronaldo In Europe

Mar 14, 2019 11:31 AM

Bernardo Silva is wary of facing Ronaldo and Juventus in the next round of the Champions League following their 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

“I wouldn’t like it very much, to be honest. I know him, I know what he’s capable of and once again tonight he proved it. When you are playing in a competition like this you have to know that you can get drawn against these kind of teams, these kind of players,” said Silva.

Silva also clarified Pep Guardiola's comments rating him as the best Portuguese player in the world.

“I think people interpreted things a little different to what he meant. Of course Cristiano, what he has done in over the last 15 years in football is probably one of the best players ever in the history of football, so no comparison to him.”

Liverpool Beats Bayern 3-1, Advances To UCL Quarterfinals

Mar 14, 2019 9:02 AM

Liverpool defeated Bayern Munich 3-1 in the second leg of their Round of 16 Champions League tie.

Sadio Mane scored twice in the match.

“Scoring three goals here is massive and a big step for us, a big, big step,” Jurgen Klopp said. “We will see what we can do with it but it is a fantastic sign. We set a mark for LFC tonight that we are back on the international landscape as a football club. I am really happy about the result and the fact that we are through. I knew we had a chance but I didn’t expect it would happen, but the boys made it happen and it was really brilliant.

“This is important for where we want to get to. There are some places in world football that whatever team comes here – Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona – they wouldn’t expect to win it. They know it’s a tough place to come. This club always has outstandingly strong football teams but we kept them away from our goal as well as possible. There were not too many difficult situations in and around our box and that is a massive sign.

“It is not about playing free-flowing football because that is not possible against a side of this quality, you have to find different ways and we found them. That makes me really proud and happy because I think this club deserves recognition and awareness again. We are back – that’s good, we have a lot to learn but we are back. We are back. There is no doubt we are back again.”
